Developing awareness
Tennis ball touchdown
Focus
- Looking off the ball, finding space and connecting with teammates.
Time
- 5 mins
Rules
- No sticks. Start with a jump ball.
- Catch and stop, no running with the ball.
- No contact, intercept or block only.
- Dropped or blocked ball = turnover.
- Complete 3 passes before entering the end zone. Defenders stay out.
Small game
One touch
Focus
- Build the habit of looking off the ball.
Time
- 10 mins, rotate 2 players every 3 mins.
Rules
- 4 v 2 players.
- 4 players can only take one touch (trap > pass), they just retain possession.
- 2 players can run with the ball, and score in the goal (push only from close range).
Attacking an outnumber (2 v 1)
The skill
How to do this skill
- Run at the defender (engage them), do not run away from the defender.
- Watch where your teammate runs, and where the defender moves.
- Decide on the right move (e.g. pass direct, pass through, take the defender on).
When to use
- You’re running at a defender with a free teammate.
How to teach this skill
Demonstrate the full skill
Before starting, explain the concepts when doing a 2 v 1. Emphasise the importance of running at the defender.
1Ghost lead
Player with the ball runs at the defender. Player without the ball tracks towards the defender too, then shuffles away to create space, before straightening.
2Through ball
Player with the ball runs at the defender. Player without the ball tracks towards the defender too, then at the last moment takes off behind the defender. Player with the ball must make a ‘weighted’ pass in behind.
3Go yourself
Player with the ball senses the defender is anticipating the pass. Player with the ball fakes the pass and goes themselves.
