Slapping over distance
The skill
How to do this skill
- Get low, left foot level with the ball, right knee nearly touching the ground.
- Take a low backswing.
- Snap your wrists on the backswing, and again when making contact.
- Make contact on the shaft, just back from the stick head.
- Bring the stick through along the surface, following through around your body.
When to use
- You have an open player over distance.
How to teach this skill
Demonstrate the full skill
Before starting, show the full skill so players see what they’re aiming for. Then explain the key components.
1Start with technique
Players pass back and forth across the field over distance. Coaches review each player’s technique and provide feedback.
2Follow your pass
The aim is to get it to a teammate through the cones – with speed and accuracy. Alter the distance between cones depending on skill level. The final player has a shot on goal.
3Play a game
Play a game to practise passing over distance. Follow the same coaching principles as the small games in previous sessions.
